Avocado season 2011

We are halfway thru the Peruvian Hass season. The season started slowly due to cold weather conditions in the first few months of 2011. First arrivals were in April and will go thru mid September. The quality of the avocados is very good and in June imports from Peru showed an increase of +40% vs one year ago. It is promotion time! The Chilean Hass season will start in September and will run until Feb/March 2012.

US Market

South American Avocado growers are anxiously awaiting approval of the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) to use cold treatment during transportation. This will bring the USA within their geographic reach and will open a market that is currently undersupplied and paying much higher prices than the European market. Availability and prices of Avocados in Europe are expected to be impacted as soon as soon as the FDA gives it's go.
