Better quality of public education in Ica, Peru

Ica is a region in Peru where Nature's Pride buys products such as avocados, asparagus and pomegranates. Since 2015 Nature's Pride has supported, in collaboration with growers and a local organisation "Empresarios Por La Educación" a program, spanning a few years, to improve the quality of public education in Ica.

Background & Program

A survey by the Ministry of Education in Peru has shown in 2014 that the children at public education schools in Peru have an insufficient reading and mathematics level than required. In the cities this level is better than in rural areas. Our growers Agricola La Venta, Campos del Sur and Agricola Don Ricardo wanted to help improve the education level of their employees' children who go to public schools in Ica. Eight schools have been selected for this program.

In this 3-year program, 68 teachers from eight schools will be shown new methods to teach reading, writing and mathematics. The teachers will be coached three times a year for 8 days from 14:30 to 19:30 pm, after their normal work. In addition, they are coached by monthly observations during their work where they get feedback at the same time. Meetings are organised as well for the teachers to share knowledge and exchange experiences. The schools organise events in which students are able to present their projects and the children's parents are well informed too of the new teaching methods. On top of that there is an opportunity for voluntary activities of the companies that make this project possible. On May 24, 2016 Agricola Don Ricardo gave the children a lesson about recycling and reuse of materials.
