Sugar cane

Sugar in its natural form

Sugarcane - Product photo

Sugar cane is related to grass but looks more like bamboo. The exotic stems are responsible for three quarters of the (cane) sugar production in the world. The Chinese and Indians already knew 25 centuries ago that the juice of this plant is wonderfully sweet. During cultivation, the stems can grow up to 3 metres high. The lower leaves have already died by then, only the top of the crop is still green. The stems are white-green in colour, with long fibres.
