Chayote

Pear-shaped vegetable with apple-like bite

Chayotte - Product photo

One of the least known vegetables in Nature's Pride's range is the chayote. Incidentally, 'vegetable' is not the first association that springs to mind. Its looks are more of a cross between a pear and an apple, with deep folds. The bite of a chayote is firm, like an apple.

In terms of taste, it is a combination of Cantaloupe and cucumber, the latter being directly related. The soft stone that can be found in the flesh is edible. It is one of the first vegetables to be cultivated by man. The chayote was cultivated by the Aztecs and the Maya.

Recipes & preparation tips

The folds are clever indications of where best to cut the chayote. Peeled and cut into quarters, the vegetables are easy to process. Use them as crudité or to fill and gratiné.
