Lesser-known rival of celery

Lovage has a recognisable appearance, and yet it is a fresh herb that is less well known in the kitchen. It resembles celery in appearance, and has its flavour in common with it as well. The taste is very distinctive. In popular parlance it is also called 'maggi herb', a pet name that lovage owes to the similarity in taste (spicy and savoury) with the well-known seasoning liquid of the same name.

This makes fresh lovage a wonderful salt substitute for those who wish to reduce their salt intake or are not allowed to consume salt at all. It is an attractive-looking plant with large leaves and yellowish flowers. The entire plant can be used in the kitchen: root, stem and leaves.

Storage advice

  • Transport and storage: Fresh herbs such as lovage keep longer when refrigerated. Tip: a temperature between 2 and 4˚C is perfect for transport and storage.
  • Shop: Put lovage in the refrigerated section with the other herbs.

Recipes & preparation tips

With its aroma and taste so close to celery's, the uses are also similar. Lovage is a pleasant and tasty companion in potato dishes and with seafood. It also adds an interesting touch to a tomato salad. Rinse lovage gently and pat dry with kitchen paper. It can be roughly chopped or used whole.
