Red pitahaya

Red pitahayas are oval shaped cactus fruit with a pink-reddish colour. The scaly skin has green protrusions that fold delicately around the fruit. The red pitahaya has red or white flesh (depending on the variety) and contains many small edible seeds. A red pitahaya has a slightly sweet flavour.

Storage advice

Red pitahaya is kept refrigerated in storage and during transport. The ideal temperature during transport is between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius. At home the red pitahaya needs to be kept in the fridge.

Growing and harvesting

The red pitahaya is a cactus fruit that grows on climbing cactus plants. The first red pitahayas can be harvested 18 months after planting the pitahaya cactus plant (taken from a mother plant). After harvesting, the pitahayas are packed in boxes of three kilograms for transport by aeroplane or boat to the Netherlands. At Nature's Pride, some of the pitahayas are re-packaged for sale to the consumer.
