Pepino

Pepinos combine the flavours of cucumber and melon.

Pepino - Product picture

Pepinos are also known as 'melon-pears'. Its name is derived from its taste, however, because pepinos are most reminiscent of a cross between a cucumber and a Cantaloupe melon. In terms of size, oval-shaped pepinos are similar to an apple. The colour of the peel is purple-brown. The yellow flesh is juicy and soft. There are lots of small seeds in the centre of the fruit. The skin and seeds are not edible.

Pepinos come in two varieties. Toma is slightly smaller and lighter in weight, with a yellower colour than the Normal variety. At Nature's Pride, we sell the latter the most: a slightly greener pepino with purple stripes on the outside and cream to yellow flesh on the inside.

Recipes & preparation tips

Cutting vertically is the best way to consume a pepino. Then remove the inedible seeds from the core. The fruit can then be spooned out or sliced. The fresh sweetness of pepinos works well in salads. And why not try other culinary experiments? The fruit is a surprising accompaniment to cod. As a filling, pepinos are also a delicious and adventurous alternative for the well-known apple tart.
